Most travelers need an Electronic
Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter Sri Lanka. Apply online at the official portal
(eta.gov.lk). It's typically processed within 48 hours.
Tip: Print a
copy of your approved ETA as some airlines request it during check-in.
Sri Lanka offers diverse transport
options. For cities, use PickMe or Uber (tuk-tuks are
available via app too!). For cross-country travel, the legendary train journey from Ella to
Kandy is a must-do.

May - Sept: Perfect for the East Coast (Trincomalee/Arugam Bay) and
Cultural Triangle treasures.
The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). ATMs are widely available. While large hotels/shops accept Visa/MasterCard, carry cash for local vendors, street food, and smaller remote locations.
Dress respectfully when visiting temples (cover shoulders & knees). Remove shoes/hats before entering. Never turn your back to a Buddha statue for photos. A friendly 'Ayubowan' is the traditional greeting!
Sri Lankan food is a spice-lover's dream!
Must-tries include Rice & Curry, Egg Hoppers, Kottu Roti, and fresh seafood.
Safety: Stick to bottled or filtered water to stay hydrated and
refreshed.
Tourist SIM cards (Dialog or Mobitel) are
extremely cheap and offer excellent 4G coverage. Buy one directly at the arrival hall at Colombo
Airport.
Tip: Almost all hotels and cafes provide free Wi-Fi as well.
Sri Lanka operates on a 230V supply. The
standard power plugs are Type G (UK 3-pin) and sometimes the older Type
D (round 3-pin).
Tip: Carry a universal travel adapter to
ensure your devices stay charged without hassle.
Sri Lanka is tropical. Strong sunblock, a
hat, and reliable mosquito repellent are absolute packing
essentials.
Note: Pharmacy access is good, but bring specific
prescription medications from home just in case.
